Who's behind TryPenguin

TryPenguin is one person’s product, so it’s fair to ask who.

At Manpower I worked on the platform strategy for Defence Force Recruiting, the joint Manpower–Defence business — working out what the recruitment process needed to do, and getting the systems in that did it. That is the side of the desk where you decide what a system should look for.

Then I spent seventeen years on the other side of it. From 2004 to 2021 I was hiring — at Travelport, then at Webjet, where I finished as Group CIO with around 300 people across Product and Technology in eight countries. I hired at every level, from first roles through to CTO, and helped build the career paths and training that went with them.

What I have mostly been about is building high performing teams, and helping people see and then realise their potential. Since 2022 I have done that through Mint Nimbus, my other business, coaching people one to one in the roles they are already in.

TryPenguin exists because of what kept happening in those conversations. The first move was always the same — read someone’s record from outside, tell them what it is actually saying, then ask the questions that raises.

That first move is what TryPenguin does. It is the read of your own CV that almost nobody gets. The point of it is that you end up owning your own story, rather than being handed a better-written version of it.

On Mint Nimbus

Mint Nimbus is my other business, and a separate company. It advises product and technology teams; TryPenguin sells coaching documents to individuals. Different customers, different work, same person — worth saying plainly rather than leaving you to find it.

What this is not

I am not a professional career coach, and TryPenguin is not a coaching session.

The documents are generated by AI I have configured and tuned for this work, against rules about what it must not claim. It will not invent a number your CV does not support. It tells you where its own read is thin. It is designed to help you think, not to replace professional advice, and the decisions stay yours.
